Routine appointments

Do you need an appointment?

You should consider contacting us if you have any of the following:

Severe Symptoms: If you experience severe pain, difficulty breathing, or other serious symptoms (such as high fevers in children).

For severe symptoms please call us, preferably before midday.

Our Patient Services Team will ask you questions that will help our clinicians determine the urgency in which you need to be contacted by our acute care team.  This is usually the same day, but may be the next day depending on clinical priority.

You may want to check your symptoms first:

Get help for your symptoms – NHS 111

Outside of these times please call 111.

Persistent Symptoms: If you have symptoms that last more than a few weeks, such as a cough, pain, or fatigue.

Usually online advice or a Pharmacy will be able to help you with a lot of common health conditions. Pharmacists can even prescribe certain medications.

How pharmacies can help – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

If you have persistent symptoms that you haven’t been able to get the appropriate advice or treatment for elsewhere, or what you have tried hasn’t eased your symptoms then you can either call us or come into our GP surgery.

One of our Patient Services Team will assist you which will include asking you questions that will help our clinicians determine how best we can help you. You will be contacted within 5 working days with their recommendations which may well be an appointment with an appropriate clinician. If they feel you need to be contacted sooner, then they will ensure this happens.

If your symptoms worsen whilst waiting to hear back from us, then please call 111.

You can also use our online consultation service (please note that this service has limited availability) and a clinician will review. You will be contacted within 5 working days.

Mental Health Concerns: If you’re feeling anxious, depressed, or experiencing other mental health issues.

For suicidal thoughts or an urgent mental health crisis please call 111.

TALKWORKS, Devon’s NHS Talking Therapies Service, offers free and confidential psychological therapy. They are there to help adults, age 18+, living in Devon (outside Plymouth), who may be experiencing a common mental health problem such as stress, anxiety, depression or insomnia. They offer a range of talking therapies and treatment options to help get you back on track and feel more like yourself again. You can self-refer online:

Referral Form (mayden.co.uk)

If your mental health concerns are more persistent and overwhelming then you can contact us as you would for any persistent symptoms, and this will be reviewed by us in the same way as detailed for section 2. One outcome could be that you are referred to our Wellbeing Team, to find out more about them click the link here.

Chronic (long-term) Conditions: If you have a chronic condition like diabetes or asthma and need regular check-ups.

We will likely contact you to book regular check-ups or follow-ups which could be with a GP or a member of our Nursing Team. If you are concerned about your condition or your symptoms are worsening or changing, then please contact us by phone or by popping into the surgery. A member of our Patient Services Team will assist you which will include asking you questions that will help our clinicians determine how best we can help you.

With chronic conditions we really try to ensure continuity of care which means you see the same clinician to help manage your care, although this could be 2 or 3 clinicians working together such as a Nurse, GP and member of the Wellbeing Team. Where possible we would want you to wait to see a member of your dedicated care team to help with anything relating to your chronic (long-term) condition, but our Acute Care Team can assist within a shorter timeframe if you have severely worsening symptoms.

Preventive Care: For routine check-ups, vaccinations, and screenings.

You or someone you care for may be eligible for health checks, vaccinations or screenings. We will usually contact you to let you know this and make the appointment but please feel free to call us, pop in or send us an administrative query through our online consultation system if you think are eligible and may need a health check, vaccination or screening.

Home Visits

There are better facilities for examining and treating patients at our GP Surgery so we prefer all patients to be seen at the surgery, where possible. if you can get someone to bring you in for an appointment that may be beneficial to you, or you can use Newton Abbot Community Transport to arrange for transportation to and from your appointment.

01626 335775

If you are bed bound and absolutely cannot get in to be seen then we will visit you in your home, requests should be made before 10am to enable all visit requests to be planned efficiently. Often it will be a GP that will come out to see you, but it may be a Paramedic or Nurse Practitioner who are highly skilled. They will liaise with a GP back at the surgery, if needed.

It helps to assess the necessity and urgency of a visit request if you can accurately describe the symptoms and the state of the patient.

Please phone 01626 208020, before 10:00am if you think you need a home visit.
