Mounjaro Eligibility Criteria
Frequently Asked Questions: If You’re Not Eligible for NHS Mounjaro
Why am I not eligible for Mounjaro on the NHS?
NHS access to tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) is currently being introduced in phases. At present, only people who meet strict national eligibility criteria can be offered treatment. Eligibility is based on BMI and specific weight-related health conditions.
I have a BMI over 35. Why can’t I get Mounjaro?
NHS England is introducing access gradually. During the current rollout, additional criteria apply and priority is being given to people with the highest clinical need – a BMI of over 35 and 4 or more medical conditions (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and sleep apnoea).
Can my GP prescribe Mounjaro if I ask for it?
Unfortunately, GPs cannot prescribe Mounjaro outside of the NHS eligibility criteria. Treatment decisions must follow national guidance and local NHS commissioning arrangements.
Will I become eligible in the future?
Possibly. NHS England plans to expand access over time, meaning eligibility criteria may change as the rollout progresses.
What support is available if I’m not eligible?
There are many effective approaches to weight management, including:
- Dietetic support
- Structured weight management programmes
- Physical activity support
- Behaviour change coaching
- Psychological support where appropriate
Your healthcare professional can discuss the options available in your area.
Can I access weight-loss medication privately?
Some people choose to access weight-loss medications through private providers. If you are considering this, ensure the provider is appropriately regulated and that you receive ongoing clinical support.
Does not qualifying mean my weight isn’t affecting my health?
Not at all. NHS eligibility criteria are based on national funding and prioritisation decisions, not on whether your weight matters or whether you deserve support. If you’re concerned about your weight or health, please speak to a healthcare professional about the support available to you.
What can I do now?
Focus on sustainable habits that support your health:
- Regular meals
- Increasing physical activity where possible
- Prioritising sleep
- Managing stress
- Seeking support when needed
Small, consistent changes can make a significant difference over time.
